Amsterdam Green Mountains
A global operating architecture and urbanism practice MVRDV presented a project called Valley, manifesting a symbiosis of modern architecture and natural environment. Valley is a place where nature and contemporary design merge together to create a building that embodies both the natural landscape and modern urban conveniences. It is a place for work and living with an impressive public garden running through its three peaks with heights up to 100m.
Modern Amsterdam is one of the most highly urbanized cities in Western Europe: with a total area of 219.4 square kilometers, the population density of the capital is 4,457 people per square kilometer. At the same time parks and nature reserves make up only 12% of urban areas. Unfortunately, urbanization has practically destroyed the natural landscape of the city, and the districts around the historical center become rather faceless. However, now the municipality of Amsterdam is making serious attempts to change it.
MVRDV’s competition-winning design for OVG Real Estate was selected by the Municipality of Amsterdam in 2015 and will include apartments, offices, an underground parking, a sky bar and various retail and cultural facilities. The design and program mediates between human scale, nature and the atmosphere of the business district.
Mid-August marked the start of construction for Valley, a 75,000 m2, green-terraced, mixed-use building located on the Amsterdam’s Central Business District Zuidas.
