Brisbane’s Hayes Anderson Lynch Architects (HAL) made a proposal for a unique Victorian Neo-Gothic-style inspired tower, reported recently the Brisbane City Council development portal.
A mixed-use development for Brisbane will make use of a unique-shaped façade inspired by a neighboring historic building.
Designed by Hayes Anderson Lynch Architects (HAL), the ‘Broadway’ project in Woolloongabba will incorporate the 1800’s Broadway Hotel’s turret design.
In respect to the neighboring building, originally designed by John Hall & Son in 1890, HAL have translated the shape and scale of its historic turrets onto its glazed façade.
And now, the firm and the project get a second run in the press as it has just become apparent that ‘Broadway’ in Woolloongabba could eventually be Australia’s first project to incorporate the innovative Bloomframe window/balcony.
Designed by Amsterdam-based Hofman Dujardin Architects, the window system allows entire sections of an apartment’s wall to fold outwards to create a balcony extension.

In respect to the neighboring building, originally designed by John Hall & Son in 1890, HAL have translated the shape and scale of its historic turrets onto its glazed façade. This has been done with triangular fenestrations, steep dormer roof volumes and an all glazed podium with triangular shapes.
The $260 million development will include 262 apartments (a mixture of one, two, three and four bedroom), a three-level commercial and retail podium and 40 commercial sites. Other amenities include resort style facilities, like an exercise lap pool with a timber sundeck and steam room, and external entertainment spaces.
Built as luxury accommodation for those visiting from out of town, the Broadway Hotel was designed to demonstrate the wealth and excitement of the time. The hotel is important in demonstrating the evolution and pattern of Queensland’s historical construction boom of the 1880’s.
The new proposal comes at a time when Brisbane’s city frame suburbs are experiencing a rapid construction growth. Numerous projects have been proposed and/or approved by Council for construction in close proximity to the subject site such as DBI Architect’s South City Square development.
