In the Pearl River Delta: OCT Tower
The unusual high-rise architecture has become a business card of Shenzhen. Only 35 years ago, the city in the Pearl River Delta was a small fishing village, which today grown into a prosperous dynamic metropolis, included in the top ten cities in the world with the ample quantity of eye-catching skyscrapers.
Spirited project of the new tower in Shenzhen, designed by the New York architectural firm Studio Link-Arc, vividly demonstrates us one more nonstandard urban solution for successful integration of various urban functionalities in a single building.
Studio Link-Arc’s proposal for the OCT Tower originated from a detailed observation of the site. Defined by an existing office building and bordered by the nearby Hantang tower, an existing sculpture park, and a major vehicular thoroughfare, the design needed to reconcile many different conditions.
Early in the design process, SLA decided to avoid typical urban development models which create cramped urban spaces and diminish public landscape, opting instead for a new approach. Studio Link-Arc’s scheme for the OCT Tower seamlessly integrates architecture, landscape, and urbanism, creating a contemporary public space for residents, visitors, and office workers.
