Innovations Controlled, or How to Ensure High Quality Designs, Not Relying on SNiPs
When a building is designed and constructed according to not current regulations, but on project specific technical specifications, then the control of their implementation quality is complicated ipso facto in proportion to the novelty and complexity of engineering solutions. First of all, this is the case of tall buildings. This article deals with an experience gained while constructing a foundation for the Lakhta Center – the northernmost skyscraper in the world.
This foundation is to support 670,000 tons – the weight of the 462-meter tower. The lower slab of the box-shaped foundation is the world’s largest cast-in-situ structure. This was the reason for listing the Lakhta Center mixed-use complex in the Guinness Book of World Records with the world championship in continuous pouring – 19,624 cubic meters of B60 grade self-compacting concrete were placed in the tower base within 49 hours. The reinforced framework of the lower slab weighs 9,600 tons, just like the Eiffel Tower. The previous record was set a year before when constructing the Wilshire Grand Center tower in Los Angeles where 16,208 cubic meters were cast in the foundation mat.
Laying of the lower slab was a quintessence of the two-year work of designers and process engineers who developed special testing and laboratory research programs along with technical guidelines. Leading Russian institutes took part in the creation of this unique building.
GORPROJECT coordinated project solutions, sequence of works and compliance with process requirements when constructing box-shaped foundation structures. Specialists had to work with builders and building authorities to promptly deal with a host of issues arising during the reinforcement and concrete casting of such a complex structures directly during field supervision.
