Smoky pinnacles of Berlin
Ferminnan + Spagnoletta Architects have planned a kaleidoscopic skyscraper hotel in Berlin located between Alexanderplatz and The Hackescher, which focuses on overlapping volumes. The project’s metal patterned facades allow the building’s skin to breathe and act as a filter for incoming and outgoing light and to display its convincing volume at the same time.
Two hundred and sixty apartments and rooms are distributed within the building, with a variety of typologies, adapted for different needs. Stylish and friendly interiors provide a warm atmosphere bathed in light. Each bedroom’s design invites the guests to rest and dream in a space where the protagonist is the moonlight. Originality, luxury and freedom define the rooms that awake guests’ senses. Each space has a strong identity and creates the ideal atmosphere for a relaxing stay.
Ferminnan + Spagnoletta started this project remembering the city’s history because it has a very important role in the city’s current architecture. Nowadays Berlin continues to reinvent itself. It is a city where people can fell freedom and creativity and this has been possible thanks to the series of transformations that the city has gone through. The city’s history and fractures gave the architects the main key for the project: They defragmented the initial volume and started with the idea of creating overlapping volumes, covering much of its skin with a material that refers to its industrial past: metal.
Berlin’s iconic skyline is a combination of historical and modern buildings that is constantly growing in height, so the architects focused on vertical growth. Another reason to rely on overlapping volumes was scale. The architects played with smaller volumes to create a friendly face and then overlapped them.
