Zagreb’s New Gate
Istanbul-based Superspace architectural practice has proposed a new concept for a pocketed timber observation tower in Zagreb, Croatia. Designed to be an iconic gate, the project might be set in between the old and new city districts. Called Ascension, the timber structure would serve as a “new gate” in symbolic terms linking the historic parts of the city and the post-war areas. If built, the tower would be the 10th tallest building in all of Zagreb and one of the tallest wooden structures in Europe.
Zagreb is located in the north-west of Croatia and is known for its Austro-Hungarian architecture patterns of the 18th and 19th centuries. The center of Zagreb is called Upper Town. There are located the famous two-tower Gothic Zagreb Cathedral and St. Mark’s Church with a colored tiled roof, built in the XIII century. Conventionally, the city is divided into three districts, and the historical center is Gornji Grad (Upper town). Quarters and streets of this district were built in the Middle Ages, and the most of the excursions take place in this part of the city. The shopping center of Zagreb is called Donji Grad (Lower city), on its streets and squares one may find the largest markets, shopping centers, fairs and various entertainment events. Both areas are considered the historical center of the city. The modern part of the city is called Novi Zagreb (New Zagreb), which was established no more than fifty years ago. This is the center of business and commercial activity of the city. It is distinguishing with its high-rise buildings, office centers and large entertainment complexes.
The project takes inspiration from Zagreb’s historical and natural iconic landmarks. Facing the south bank of River Sava, the tower’s form is derived from the character of the old town’s existing towers integrated with a new vertical forest.
