Flying Garden Ready to Take Off

The designs for the Flying Garden Tower project, released by Coop Himmelb(l)au will form part of the Gateways Gardens district in Frankfurt, Germany. The building will be located in the urban district development Gateways Gardens that is part of Frankfurt Airport City, one of Europe’s main transportation hubs. With its outstanding profile and polygonal shape, the Flying Garden Tower is a 67 m tall building, easily recognisable from any part of Frankfurt Airport, as well as from the nearby motorways. This makes the Flying Garden Tower a highly visible landmark for this new district.

The interaction between architecture and sustainable design of the Flying Garden Tower answers specific requirements of the location and offers technological solutions to the preservation of the local environment. The elliptic shape and orientation of the building optimise its climate efficiency: the east and west façades are mostly exposed to solar light, so they are protected by the buffer zone of the atriums, as tall as the building itself, and with suspended ‘flying’ gardens. In the east and west areas are also located conference and meeting rooms.

Also the north and south façades are optimally aligned in terms of energy efficiency: the flexible and adaptable spatial concept enables office cubicles, private and open-plan offices, and bull pens.
