Metropolitan Broadcaster
Beijing TV Center was built in a modernist style in 2008 as the project developed by Nikken Sekkei, in partnership with the Beijing Institute of Architectural Design. The buildings are situated on the site, located in the central business district, 6 km east of the square Tian An Myn.
Owing to its dense urban context, the building program-editing/production and management departmentsare stacked around a steel 240 m high “superstructure” that contains a large atrium at its center. This atrium works as a device to integrate whole facilities and to activate the employee’s communication. The BTC headquarters houses the broadcasting offices and facilities for production, editing, and transmission of programs. Most broadcasters arrange space for these functions in horizontal plan, occupying significant urban area, but China’s Beijing Television Center makes efficient use of its limited building site with a vertically oriented design that also secures adequate space for a plaza and greenery.
After performing an analysis of the necessary functions, the various elements were clustered in three separate buildings: the main tower, the studios, and the amenities building. The main tower houses the broadcasting offices and facilities for production, editing, and transmission of programs. The studios, which require large spaces and have to fulfill various sound-related conditions, are stacked vertically in a separate structure. Employee service facilities (cafeteria, lounges, security station, etc.) are brought together in the amenities building. Staff/ employee parking, accommodating some 900 cars, is provided in the basement.
