Boosting Cross Border Trade

A design competition to masterplan two prime sites in the Shenzhen Qianhai Special Economic Zone has been won by Farrells. Initiated to boost cross border trade between Hong Kong and Shenzhen, the mixeduse development is destined for an easily-accessible site adjacent to the Qianhaiwan Metro Station.

Founder of Farrells Sir Terry Farrell stated: “This project represents a great opportunity to bring sustainable design principles to this dynamic and rapidly expanding part of Shenzhen. The proximity of the area to Hong Kong is important and Qianhai will benefit from cross border trade to soon become a thriving district in its own right.”

More than 460,000 sq m of commercial space will be provided as part of the masterplan, comprised entirely of grade-A offices. Also onsite will be serviced apartments, high-end residential units and retail outlets. Visitors to the site will be met by a pair of 185m-high gateway towers and a soaring 320m-high structure.

Renderings released by Farrells show the uppermost portions of these three towers sporting enhanced transparency, indicating enclosed skygardens, atriums or entertainment venues. Many elements of the site are interconnected at multiple levels to create a ‘three dimensional masterplan’ for the site.
