Last December in Jakarta, Kuningan was held the groundbreaking ceremony of Pertamina Tower, which was attended by CEO of Pertamina Karen Agustiawan and management staffs of Rasuna Epicentrum. Pertamina Energy Tower as the representation of Pertamina’s transformation to become the World Class Energy Company is also expected to become the new landmark of the Capital and national pride.
Pertamina Energy Tower, a highly sustainable corporate headquarters in Jakarta, designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM), the renowned architecture, engineering, interiors and planning firm. Created for the state-owned energy company, Pertamina, the largescale project will feature a performing arts and exhibition pavilion, a mosque, and a central energy plant in addition to the office tower. Rising more than 500 meters above Jakarta, the tower will be a new landmark on the capital’s skyline.
“Pertamina Energy Tower’s iconic presence will stand as a model of sustainability and efficiency, as well as collaborative workplace design,” states Scott Duncan, AIA, the SOM Director who led the project’s design. “The headquarters’ performance-driven design supports and reflects the ambition of Pertamina’s mission and forges an innovative model of green development in Jakarta.” Pertamina Energy Tower is the world’s first supertall tower for which energy is the primary design driver. Sustainable strategies at the core of its design are exposed in its simple profile yet sophisticated architectural expression. This 99 storeys building will have a height of 530 meter, which is twice of the highest today skyscraper of Indonesia – Wisma 46. Its total area is 540.000m2 wide above the 5,7 ha land area. Pertamina Energy Tower is designated to fulfill the needs of workspace for Pertamina and the entire subsidiary with the capacity of 23.000 workers.
The energy-harnessing theme is clear. The key structural feature of the building is gently tapering towards a rounded top, resembling the petals of a flower, the tower opens up at the crown, revealing a ‘wind funnel’ that will take advantage of the prevailing winds and increased wind speeds at the upper floors to generate energy. Precisely calibrated for Jakarta’s proximity to the equator, the tower’s curved facade will mitigate solar heat gain across all four seasons. A central energy plant will serve as the energy production hub for the campus, a literal and figurative “heart” from which energy and services will be distributed.
