Architectural search of the present is no longer limited to artistic or functional aspects of separate units of built habitat. However, these points are still important for any practicing architect, but the contemporary design approach is becoming even more comprehensive. New concepts are able to form the novel lifestyles. The very functionality of new buildings or complexes suggests other ways of urban existence.

The annual eVolo Skyscraper Competition is aimed at collecting and promoting the innovative ideas reinventing modern life by means of architecture and many related disciplines, as well as latest scientific achievements determining the future. Compatibility of new architecture and existing environment is a fundamental goal of this competition. Proposing balanced and thought-out solutions makes this showcase absolutely different from those pure fantasy parades.

Each submitted project represents a skyscraper or high-rise facility sensitive to its specific whereabouts offering further evolvement of the concept. Even the entries at famous Japanese competitions of 1980’s, where, incidentally, the domestic conceptual paper architecture was celebrated a lot, were not scientifically and technically feasibility so. Today we can enjoy outstanding spatial solutions harmoniously combining natural and artificial components.

If a structure employs the natural principles of self-replication, self-control and self-balance, it still looks like a revolution. No wonder that the LO2P concept inspired by such a philosophy found favour in the eyes competition jury aimed at determining current architectural trends with regard to sustainability. Most of projects from around the world featuring in the eVolo Skyscraper Competition 2011 reflect a tendency to use the available scientific, technical and artistic resources in concert leaving behind the restraints of conventional ways of designing.

Establishing the new professional mentality is one of the key tasks of the competition. It’s much exciting to review the options of would-be urban evolution collected from different countries. The matter of specific pleasure is solid performance of the successors of the Soviet design school. And although this year’s Grand Prix went to representatives of some other architectural origin, that’s no doubt that the tradition of domestic paper architecture lives on.
