Ocean Overlooking Penthouse

The DBI Design Architecture-designed Sanbano Coolangatta residences on the Gold Coast, Australia have been completed. The high-rise residential tower was commissioned by Hong Kong-based developer Sanbano Group and the design speaks to the area’s reputation as a thriving beach resort. Anchoring the development is a boutique retail podium and glass-rich atrium featuring high ceilings.

Approximately half of the 28 units occupy an entire floor of the tower, boasting around 300 sq m per apartment. Some of these are even larger, with the luxurious penthouse apartment including three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a generous outdoor entertainment area with barbeque and seating options, recently selling for more upwards of AUS$4m.

The fluid exterior of the Sanbano Coolangatta complex enabled the design team at DBI Design Architecture to generate separate living spaces within the apartments which all enjoy wide-pan views. There are also separate zones for adults and children to ensure that parents can engage in working from home or entertaining their friends while their children are occupied in a different area of the home.

DBI Director Barry Lee explains: “We were fortunate to have a fantastic canvas to work with – the Sanbano site is the last remaining beachfront site in Coolangatta. It’s a large block and it’s north facing, so with this favourable location and aspect we have been able to do something really special.

“The building itself is intended to reflect the dynamic and poetic qualities of the ocean, over which it enjoys a commanding position. The fluid form of the building is intended to represent a response to the rolling waves, the rippling sand and the cooling breezes, which are the essential qualities that attract people to Coolangatta. The ‘rippling’ facade not only serves an aesthetic purpose – but also optimises interior living spaces and view corridors for residents.”
