Rising Vietnam
High-rise construction in Vietnam is a vibrant sign of the new millennium. Prior to the XXI century the architecture of the Vietnamese cities was mainly represented by lowrise development with a minimum length of streets and their significant deepening into quarters. But times have changed and in the fast developing country arose the demand for highrise construction, which is largely driven by the urbanization of the population of Vietnam and the scarcity of its land resources.
In early August of this year in Ho Chi Minh City was announced the start of construction of a supertall skyscraper named Vincom Landmark 81 and designed by Atkins. Atkins is the lead architect working closely with Arup for the structural design, one of many global projects on which the two British design companies are collaborating. With an expected height of 460m, this building will be the tallest building in Vietnam once completed, adding a new iconic landmark to Ho Chi Minh City’s ever growing skyline.
The project of Vincom Landmark 81 caused a genuine interest in business and political circles. Name a few, UK Prime Minister, David Cameron, said: “Atkins and Arup are leading the way in unlocking the potential for British businesses in Vietnam. It’s a testament to their expertise that Ho Chi Minh City’s skyline will be shaped by British design, as they work on Vietnam’s tallest skyscraper. I’m pleased they were able to join me on my trade mission as we look to further export UK excellence and forge stronger links with the fast growing economies of South East Asia.”
The skyscraper is being constructed by order of Vincom - Vietnamese premier upmarket real estate brand with a number of shopping mall, office and apartment complexes, and largescale modern mixed-use townships, spearheading the trend of high-end ecological urban zones in Vietnam. The 81-storey development is located in Vinhomes Central Park - one of the most prime locations in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Its frontage faces the beautiful Saigon River, and is conveniently connected via major road and water transportation. Featuring a modern and unusual architecture design that symbolizes the diversity and fast-emergence of Ho Chi Minh City, this mixed-use development involves space for hotel, serviced residential apartment and retail. At the base of this skyscraper is a sumptuous shopping centre featuring the finest retailers under one roof for a top-class shopping experience.
As is known, Atkins’ scope includes not only architecture and also landscape design. The 241,000m² development will also feature contemporary landscape design that merges natural beauty into this building.
