The Silver Standard of Living

The Silver Standard of Living

Busan spreading along the Korea Strait is South Korea’s second largest metropolis after Seoul. The most densely built up areas of the city are situated in a number of narrow valleys between the Nakdong River and Suyeong River, with mountains separating some of the districts. Administratively, it is designated as a Metropolitan City, which has a status equivalent to that of a province. Busan is a major regional industrial centre featuring textile, food, metal, electric, chemical, machine and ship building enterprises. The port attracts ships from all over the globe and the surrounding area aspires to become a regional financial centre.

It’s not surprising that the city is being permanently redeveloped. New urban blocks are emerging here and there next to thoroughfares and transport hubs. One of the most recent specimens is the Haeundae Udong multi-purpose complex by Studio Daniel Libeskind. The project was launched in 2006, and now the construction is in the full swing. The concept of the Haeundae Udong project is to build a powerful and unique icon expressed in a dynamic volume on the Busan waterfront.

Studio Daniel Libeskind will produce five new towers sculpted to express the dramatic beauty and power of the ocean. The curvilinear geometry of the buildings plays with concepts of traditional Korean architecture, often derived from natural beauty such as the grace of an ocean wave, the unique composition of a flower petal, or the wind-filled sails of a ship.
