TATPROF Makes the History of the Olympics 2014
The Winter Games of 2014 is announced by Russian Government as an event innovative in every way. Let it be construction, project management, application of cutting-edge materials. TATPR OF has developed the roofing series ТПСК-60500 with structural glazing especially for the cupola of the Sochi Grand Ice Arena.
The Grand Ice Arena is a unique facility located in the seaside cluster of Sochi - Imeretinskaya Lowland. This is a structure of first class complexity (seismicity of this region is 8.4 points according to Richter scale). The accommodations of the Arena are stacked in six levels, two of which compose the stylobate part.
Over the area of more than 52 thousand sq. m. there will be the principal and training hockey pitches, fitness and gym facilities, premises for umpires and teams, VIP zone, press center, medical center, outdoor and indoor parking area, system of lighting and video surveillance at 24 points covering the Arena, and also numerous cafes, fastfood diners and two restaurants with 120 seats; in toto 900 people may here.
The competition for commission of the Grand Ice Hockey Arena, including design and research works, held by Olympstroy was won by Omsk science and production association Mostovik. Implementation of the project was complicated by lack of definite normative requirements for buildings of such a rank, and as consequence it was necessary to develop the unique specifications. The draft project was substantially amended in accordance with requests of the International Olympic Committee, International Ice Hockey Federation and ecological standards.
The type of foundation was altered according to the results of additional geological and seismic searches: instead of pile base, the monolithic foundation upon the natural bed was proposed as suitable the most for seismic conditions of Imeretinskaya Lowland. Preserving the geometry of an arch the designers developed a trispan bridging to meet the regional seismic challenges. It’s worth noting that it is the very first domestic practice of arranging complex cupola roofing for ice sport facility, in contrast to other similar structures, which roofs are regularly flat.
