BIM Technology – the Way to Success

In the first days of October in Moscow took place a standout event in the field of engineering, design and visualization – International Conference of Autodesk University Russia – 2014. The organizer of this already traditional event is the company Autodesk – the world leader in the development of solutions and services for 3D-modeling, design, graphics and animation. There were about two thousand professionals at the show-floor of the Exhibition Center “Sokolniki”.

As always, Autodesk University Russia performance was extended in several thematic sections: “Architecture and construction”, “Industrial construction”, “Instrumentation”, “Infrastructure and GIS” and etc. This year, was decided to make the main focus on presentations of already completed projects both in Russia and all over the world, and sharing of practical experience.

Special attention was attended to the Building Information Modeling (BIM). BIM Technology intends using of architectural design methods to create unified information model of the building, which contains information on its geometry, spatial arrangement, geographic location, materials properties used in construction, and so on. The process of generating and managing data on buildings and structures occur throughout their entire operational cycle.

Steve Nonis (Director Senior Associate) and Viorel Iosif (Manager of Systems and technology) spokespersons of Canadian architectural firm Turner Fleischer Architects Inc., shared companies experience with the Conference participants in implementing BIM Technology. Our correspondent spoke with them about new technologies benefits and their capabilities.

Steve, at the beginning, please, say a few words about the company Turner Fleischer Architects Inc. On what kinds of buildings design do you specialize?

S N: In this year our company celebrated 40 years anniversary. Over these years we have grown from a small group into an architectural bureau, in which currently works 130 employees. Personally, I started working at Turner Fleischer Architects Inc. in 2003, and my colleague Viorel Iosif in 2002. We design many various types of buildings, which differ in their functional purpose. There were buildings (both low- and high-rise) and retail stores (for example, hypermarkets “Big box”). Note, that in North America traditionally great attention is paid on environment and green technology, so 60% of the company’s staff already has been LEED certified, and it is planned to cover all 100%, in the nearest future.

What ideas have you brought to Russia? What experience you would like to share with our architects and designers?

S N: In such events as the Autodesk University Russia usually participate large, even multinational companies.
Turner Fleischer Architects Inc. – is more medium size company, and based on our experience we would like to demonstrate the capabilities of development that have any, even the smallest organization due to the BIM Technologies. It is no secret, that in today market are dominated in particular small companies, which do not have such a budget as large organizations.

V I: We have prepared a statement, which aims to share Autodesk Building Design Suite Ultimate using experience of BIM implementation in highly competitive industry of retail sales in Canada. Based on real-life examples, we discussed the ways of change-over from CAD to BIM, as well as searching methods for new revenue streams. Our observers learned how our operating department uses such tools as Autodesk Revit, Navisworks, 3ds Max and ReCap point cloud for growth and success.
