The recent Chinese deployment led to highest population density in cities, which required dramatic revision of urban space organization. Expanded beyond the limits bulging of urban quarters is entailed by longer commuter routes, more sophisticated and lengthy utility networks. Therefore, the majority development initiatives for Chinese cities assumes the tall component, which enables to concentrate maximum operable area within relatively narrow sites.

Beijing is the third largest Chinese city after Chungking and Shanghai. This is the largest transport hub of the country. Furthermore, some key political, educational and cultural functions of the C.P.R. (Chinese Peoples’ Republic) are concentrated here, whilst Shanghai and Hong Kong are recognized as the major in economic centers. Along with this, Beijing is even more transformong into a perfect engine of free enterprize and the territory of innovation.

The city keeps on booming; however, its economic growth also causes a lot of serious issues. Recently, Beijing started to face omnipresent trafic jams, air pollution, decay of historical urban fabric, huge migrant flow from less developed regions of the country, in particular from rural areas. At the beginning of 2005 the plan called to stop further expansion of the city was approved. According to its spirit, it is decided to abandon circular general development focusing the bulk of operations within two segments to the west and to the east from the city center.

The new neighbourhood is situated between the Fifth and Sixth Ring of Beijing, in the core of the Economic Technological Development Area. In 2009 the Beijing authorities conducted a master plan competition for the area. The International Investment Square is a new area in Beijing, envisioned as a modern urban development providing an efficient and sustainable location for combining business and living. In UNStudio’s master plan the buildings fall into two distinct categories, low rise buildings and towers.

The various building blocks and voids are arranged in a com¬pact composition. An urban edge frames the central part of the new area and highlights the character of the family of towers on the north-east corner of the plot.
