Vertical Forest
Authorship of the project Bosco Verticale, which was devoted an article in the previous issue of our magazine (“The Vertical Forest”, “TB”, № 1, 2012) is owned to Boeri Studio, which was founded in 1999 by Stefano Boeri, Gianandrea Barecca, Giovanni La Varra. The company develops important architectural projects in Italy and abroad. In 2008 was divided into two separate companies: Barreca & La Varra and Stefano Boeri Architetti. Gianandrea Barecca started his career in 1996. He is one of the founding members of Gruppo a12, with whom he organizes and conducts seminars, research projects, exhibitions and installations on contemporary urban conditions, and particularly on the relationships between urban context and public art. Since 2004 he has collaborated with Domus Academy, a 2nd-level post-graduate institute, and has been director of the masters program in urban vision and architectural design of Domus Academy since 2006. He was a visiting professor of architectural design at the faculty of architecture in Genoa from 2000–2003, and since 1998 has been coordinator of the Villard seminar there. Giovanni La Varra is an architect, with a doctorate in land use planning & management. He teaches urban planning and composition at the faculty of architecture of Milan polytechnic and urban planning in the humanities department of Milan State University. His activities at Milan Polytechnic include coordination of the research for the Metrobosco project, the publication Milano. Cronache dell’abitare (Bruno Mondadori, 2007) and the feasibility study for the rehabilitation of the Sant’elia quarter of Cagliari (currently underway with area, Cagliari). He was curator of the exhibition “post-it city”, an investigation of the temporary and self-organized use of public space, sponsored by the Center of Contemporary Culture of Barcelona (catalogue CCCB 2008). Working with the research agency Multiplicity, he conducted research and designed installations on the theme of contemporary urban conditions, as well as use uncertain states of Europe (a reconnaissance of the future of European land use, exhibited in Bordeaux 2000, Brussels 2001, Tokyo 2002, Milan 2002) and solid sea (a research project on the Mediterranean presented at documenta xi in Kassel, 2002 and later exhibited in Vienna, Berlin and Rotterdam). The third founder of Boeri Studio, who currently works separately, is Stefano Boeri. He is famous Italian architect and editor-in-chief of the international magazine Abitare. Boeri teaches urban design at different countries universities and institutes. Many of his projects focus on the reconstruction of major Mediterranean ports – Marseille, Thessaloniki, Mytilini, Rotterdam, Genoa, Naples, and Trieste.
