UK-based Chetwoods Architects are working with HuaYan Group to prepare several masterplans in China. Recently the team has released details of the Phoenix Towers, amazing pair of supertall structures, which act as the centrepiece for one of these developments: environmental masterplan for Wuhan.

At 1km in height, Phoenix Towers would be the tallest pair of towers in the world upon completion, equaling the Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecturedesigned Kingdom Tower in Jeddah. Chetwoods is developing four master plans for Hua Yan Group in an area that is described in extraordinary wording on the project’s website: the huge site is part of “Central China’s new ‘Fourth Pole’ economic and cultural engine zone, where Wuhan has recently been re-designated an environmental city of the future by the regional and central governments.”

The renderings of the Phoenix Towers project look like something straight out of the scenery for “Avatar” rather than the real world buildings. But according to the architects their main purpose to give impetus to the development of green construction in China and environmentally friendly cities of the future.

The place selected by the architects for this project was not accidental. It is quite possible that the central part of China will turn into new economic and cultural zone, in which Wuhan can become one of the centers (this way sees the development of this country Chinese corporation Hua Yan Group). A statement from HuaYan Group reads: “We aim to pioneer our new vision via a programme of cultural and creative dialogue and collaboration, embracing a new era and new eclectic style that will make the best of China even better.”

Simultaneously, the concept of an “environmental city of the future” brings with it associations with advanced technologies, more commonly seen in western countries. The push for Wuhan to be seen as a technological leader with cutting-edge sustainable design is thus put into full swing with the release of these very active “green” plans.

Chetwoods Architects explain: “The scheme will provide the environmental catalyst to reinvigorate the city, actively avoiding the disastrous consequences of developments elsewhere in China. It will form the nucleus of a wider green strategy linking Wuhan’s lakes, environmentally and socially, with the region’s landmark destinations and lake district along a 20 km Green Wall of China to a new lakeside cultural tourist destination.”
