High-Tech Campus for Tencent
Having worked closely with major internet firms Google and Amazon in the creation of their high-tech campuses, NBBJ is well-versed in the design of offices for web-based companies. The international firm has now teamed up with the third-largest internet company in the world – Tencent – to design the e-commerce giant’s new home in Shenzhen.
The resulting concept focuses on a pair of high rise towers, joined by a series of three skybridges to reference the interconnectivity of the internet. These bridges each centred on a certain theme, such as the ‘Knowledge’ floor which hosts conference rooms and libraries, or the ‘Health’ bridge with its basketball courts and swimming pools.
Once the Tencent headquarters has been completed, the company will be able to host 12,000 additional employees in its Shenzhen base as the building will almost quadruple the size of its current workplace real estate portfolio. Located in the Shenzhen High-Tech Industrial Park, the towers reach 250m and 192m into the city skyline with a highly memorable design.
Energy strategies reduce consumption and carbon emissions by 40% over a typical office tower. In addition, the slight rotation of the towers and their offset heights capture the site’s prevailing winds, ventilating the atria while minimizing exposure to direct sun. To control glare and heat-gain, the curtain wall incorporates a modular shading system that varies according to the degree of sun exposure. Useractivated shading systems double as presentation boards and projection screens.
