High-rise Buildings Asymmetrical in Plan
The article gives examples of high-rise buildings asymmetrical in plan view. It describes proportioning methods of such buildings, basic force and deformation consequences of the asymmetric shape. Recommendations on proportioning and construction of buildings are given as well.
1. Introduction
Many foreign and domestic sources recommend to develop volume and planning concepts of high-rise buildings so that their plan should have at least one symmetry axis. It is necessary for provision of uniform force distribution among basic load bearing elements of a building to resist horizontal loads which play a decisive role for such category of structures. The symmetric plan also reduces twisting effects of a building, provides uniform shortening of vertical structures from vertical loads action. Still, the buildings asymmetrical in plan are being designed in the construction practice worldwide even for highly seismic areas. It is mainly connected with the need to lay architectural emphasis on a specific building, to introduce unique space and layout solutions.
The buildings asymmetrical in plan are designed rather seldom owing to less rational materials consumption and calculation complexity. Since their structural and volume and planning concepts are extremely specific and, as a rule, cannot be projected on similar facilities, many monographs related to proportioning and designing of high-rise buildings evade this class of structures.
