The largest telecommunications company of Indonesia – Telkom Indonesia has recently decided to expand its office spaces in unconventional way. It commissioned Woods Bagot – a global design and consulting firm to design a seamless campus plan for the Telkom Group that links their existing building with two new towers and a connecting podium. Central to the project and the greater Jakarta skyline is the design and construction of a 219m landmark tower at the heart of the master plan. Aspiring to architectural excellence, the new Telkom tower and headquarters complex signals the company’s continued prominence within Indonesia’s telecommunications industry.

Design Narrative

The design approach focuses on creating a seamless campus plan for Telkom that revolves around an iconic landmark tower. The scheme harmonizes the multiple building configurations on the site by organizing a clear programmatic distribution strategy and by implementing cohesive façade treatments throughout. Linking the existing on-site Graha Citra Caraka (GCC) building to the new phase one and phase two towers is a straight multi-storey bar podium that runs along the southern edge of the 3 buildings – creating conditioned public connections and providing elevated outdoor space. Lifted at ground level, the podium underbelly provides coverage and shade while extending the exterior placemaking strategy. Atop the plinth, people are able to access the mosque, with the option to expand the prayer space outdoors in order to accommodate the spill over attendance at Friday prayer.

The phase one tower subtly mimics the design articulation within the existing GCC tower of defining two interlocking volumes. The façade is treated with a vertical blade metal screen which will be incorporated in the GCC building and carried to the existing phase two tower. As the primary iconic focus of the campus, the phase two tower is placed centrally on the site. Its form is inflected in response to the dynamic site conditions and the many view corridors from which it will be seen – in particular from Jalan Gatot Subroto.
