Green Light for Eastern China

The green light has been given for a new retail development and office tower designed by Broadway Malyan in Hefei, eastern China. Designed for CITIC Capital Holdings Limited (part of a larger state-owned investment company) the 170,000 sq m scheme is due to complete in 2015.

Hefei ID Mall comprises 110,000 sq m of retail facilities across 6 storeys and a 60,000 sq m office tower which reaches 150m into the skyline. Broadway Malyan has deliberately adopted two contrasting styles for these separate areas of the development, with an angular silhouette and clean lines for the office tower and a more fluid approach to the retail block.

The smooth lines of the mall reach back to the meaning of the site’s name: ‘Bin Hu’ which means ‘Lakeside’. The design team has therefore incorporated fluid lines to evoke imagery of flowing water. The accessible roof and restaurants in this modern new facility have been orientated in the same way as the site’s original geometry to respect the historic building pattern and sustainable measure installed throughout such as rainwater reuse and green roofs.

Shanghai-based Practice Director Melvin Davis said: “Planning approval is a significant milestone in the creation of this distinctive landmark scheme. It is testament to our world-class team of design experts working in close partnership with our client to realize its vision for a special and inspirational retail and workplace environment that respects the local culture and site particulars.”
