Limassol is the second largest city in Cyprus and a sizable economic, cultural and financial center with a population of about 280 thousand people. In recent years, the very same “Russian-speaking” city of the island has actively claimed for a leadership in the country’s real estate market, especially when it comes to the elite housing sector. It is here, in Limassol and its environs, along the coastline that the most interesting and prestigious objects of both residential and commercial real estate arise. According to local media, “Limassol’s skyscrapers are both a landmarks expressing the vanguard of architectural thought, and a new way to organize the urban environment.” The new iconic project of the Limassol Tower promises to be a real architectural landmark not only of the city, but of the whole island.

OMA architectural practice and Related California, a subsidiary of Related Companies, the country’s largest real estate company, have announced the completion of The Avery. The 56-story tower located four blocks from San Francisco Bay appeared a vivid landmark for the renewed Transbay area and the first high-rise project implemented by Rem Koolhaas’s Office for Metropolitan Architecture on the West Coast.

The Second Hebei International Urban Planning and Design Competition – Xingdong New Area Urban Design International Master Competition organized by Urban Environment Design (UED) Magazine recently announced its list of winners for this year’s City of the Future edition. The concept of “Green City - Blue City”, proposed by the internationally renowned architectural  practice UNStudio, specializing in architecture, urban planning and infrastructure project became one of the finalists of the contest.

In the late 1950s Japan was recovering from the horrors of World War II and the country’s economy raised at a rapid rate. That was a time when the nation needed a powerful rebirth symbol, which would be understandable not only to the Japanese, but to the whole world. In addition, in the context of the communication boom, a compelling need for building in the country a powerful transmission tower appeared. It was the new television tower that was destined to become the main symbol of the “economic miracle” of Japan, representing a renewed and ambitious country.

eVolo Magazine has announced the winners of the 2019 Skyscraper Competition. The Jury selected 3 winners and 27 honorable mentions from 478 projects received. The annual award established in 2006 recognizes visionary ideas that through the novel use of technology, materials, programs, aesthetics, and spatial organizations, challenge the way we understand vertical architecture and its relationship with the natural and built environments.

One of the pressing topics directly related to high-rise construction is the transport of the future. Modern society is more and more inclined towards the refusal of citizens to use private cars in favor of public transport and walking. One of the steps also approaching the creation of an ideal city was the competition task of The Metals in Construction magazine 2019 Design Challenge, which offered to participants to design projects for a suspension bridge over which pedestrians could easily and enjoyably reach their destinations in New York.

Infrastructural facilities are the functional heart of modern cities. Although they are usually concealed, these buildings are essential for urban daily life. When visible, they have the potential of being a symbol of the technological achievements of our time. The aqueduct was a symbol of the development of the Roman Empire, and broadcast antennas have become icons in city skylines. Likewise, data centers are relatively new infrastructural facilities that can substantially contribute to a city’s identity.

Istanbul-based Superspace architectural practice has proposed a new concept for a pocketed timber observation tower in Zagreb, Croatia. Designed to be an iconic gate, the project might be set in between the old and new city districts. Called Ascension, the timber structure would serve as a “new gate” in symbolic terms linking the historic parts of the city and the post-war areas. If built, the tower would be the 10th tallest building in all of Zagreb and one of the tallest wooden structures in Europe.

In September 2018, Samsic Group, which is one of the major professional support services providers in Europe and the city of Rennes launched an architecture competition to generate projects for the future EuroRennes district. On July 9, 2019, the city administration announced the winner of the competition for the Féval Tower building, which became the JDS Architects Copenhagen-based practice, renowned for its distinctive projects. The complex, which architectural dominant will be the new tower, will comprise several buildings, one of which will house the future headquarters of Samsic Group.
