Downtown Dubai has been built up from desert conditions over the past 10 years, with the 828 meter tall Burj Khalifa at its center, and also features Dubai Mall, the world’s largest shopping mall, boasting 80 million visitors a year, and the spectacularly choreographed Dubai Fountain. In the final phase of development for this area, Emaar is developing a luxury apartment property on Plot D1D2 that will take its place among the highest quality residences in the Opera District, and is scheduled to open in 2019. It is particularly remarkable that The Lofts residential towers, one of the earliest developments in Downtown, stands on the adjacent site.

In downtown Grozny on the right bank of the Sunzha River is in full swing the construction of a megascale project. Akhmat Tower is a multi-functional high-rise complex named in honour of the first President of the Chechen Republic, the Hero of Russia Akhmat-Hadji Kadyrov. The MFC Akhmat Tower is being implemented by SMART BUILDING, LLC and involves world-class companies experienced in construction of supertall buildings. The 435 m high tower will be the largest development project in Chechnya and one of the tallest buildings in Russia and Europe. Akhmat Tower will be built in a high seismicity zone, but this fact is not an impediment for the construction, but quite the contrary - a kind of a challenge. The architects and project engineers successfully coped with it by developing unique structural, technological and design solutions.

UMMC Holding - a leading developer in Ekaterinburg and promoter of high-rise construction not only in Ekaterinburg but also all over Russia (the company annually holds Forum 100+, the only one in Russia international conference on high-rise construction) has held an architect contest for the best concept of the Ekaterinburg City multifunction city center in the framework of the Forum 2016. The competition was arranged with the support of the Ministry for Construction and Infrastructure Development of the Sverdlovsk Region, Ekaterinburg Administration and NP SRO “Ural Gild of Builders”.  The idea of the project is to hold an architectural creativity contest that would implement advanced Russian and world achievements in the field of design and construction of high-rise residential buildings and multipurpose edifices.

At the beginning of the XXI century, after the erection of a number of skyscrapers over 500 meter height, several deadlock problems in high-rise construction came to light. They are related to design and technical limitations: vertical transportation, evacuation, fire-fighting and anti-terrorism security of the objects, as well as to the complex logistics of construction operations that affects terms and exorbitant total cost per square meter. It makes such projects isolated, unprofitable, and therefore hopeless from the economic point of view and not energy effective from the technical one.

In the light of current decision of Moscow’s Mayor, Mr. S. Sobyanin, a brand new architectural complex, consist of the multifunctional concert hall and Moscow City Plaza (currently known as City Time Plaza) is being aimed to become a brand new center of public attraction, the landmark of Moscow, Russia, and it’s famously situated in the Moscow City district on Presnenskaya Embankment.
The whole concept of a Moscow City Plaza has been developed by joint effort of two main companies, the Fun Generations LLC., and GORPROJECT, CJSC.
The Fun Generation is a core developer and the builder for the Multifunctional Concert Hall, MCH. The company envisioned the architectural and technological designs, which shall be the state-of-the-art project for the capital of Russia.

Located on a large forested peninsula on the west side of Vancouver, the University of British Columbia is at the forefront of the global movement to revitalize mass-timber construction and be innovative in the use of engineered wood products in tall buildings. Among the large wood buildings already on campus are the Centre for Interactive Research on Sustainability, the Earth Sciences Building, and the Bioenergy Research and Demonstration Facility. The newest addition to the portfolio is the 53-m-high (18-storey) Brock Commons Phase 1 Building, featuring the first North American use of mass-timber products in a residential high-rise.

LAVA’s Zhejiang Gate Towers complex is an iconic entrance to the city of Hangzhou. The design of the two towers is based on the Chinese characters for ‘gate’, and they feature a shimmering façade of fins.

LAVA was commissioned by Shimao (Hangzhou) in 2014 to masterplan the mixed-use development, which consists of five buildings housing offices, residential, and retail. LAVA’s masterplan features fluid building masses, improved positioning of the towers from different viewing directions, logical pedestrian movement and the removal of cars from the complex.

The first shopping mall was erected in the United States in 1950 and was originally planned as a place that could bring a sense of urban life in the suburbs, but in the next decade this type of architecture received a tremendous development and turned into a multifunctional space daily visited by millions of people. Today one can easily find examples of thoughtfully designed multifunctional complexes, which are located in cities and quickly becoming an important part of our public space. They are created by talented architects often together with urbanists, sociologists and even psychologists. Today, it is possible to find there all the necessary integrants for a happy life or just entertainment and pastime. Moreover, by their structure they more and more resemble the city inside the city.
