Vancouver is the third largest city in Canada, located on the West Coast of the mainland of British Columbia. Founded in the XIX century due to the gold rush, it soon became the largest Pacific port in North America. Now this relatively small city (the population of Vancouver is just a little over 600 thousand people) is considered one of the most prosperous and comfortable for life. Three times Vancouver received from the reputable The Economist magazine the title of the world’s most liveable city and for many years in a row has not left the first places in the ranking of the best cities worldwide. Looking at the streets of Vancouver, one may see how harmoniously it combines industrial progress and striving for nature. Even though it is a developed industrial city, it still remains very green.

According to the results of recent months, the Dutch architectural practice MVRDV can be considered a leader in the development of the most impressive projects of high-rise buildings. On the pages of our magazine were presented most of them, but the project that we offer to the readers’ attention below is positioned by MVRDV architects as something special – the first step to a new skyscraper typology. Since the construction of the first high-rise buildings, the standard form of skyscrapers has become an elongated rectangle, then a great popularity gain various types of towering buildings. Nowadays, an increasing number of changes are being introduced into the established tradition, and, along with structural elements, architects pay special attention to the image of the building, making the structure not only functional and environmentally friendly, but also as singular and memorable as possible.

This year marks the 130th anniversary of the world-famous metal tower designed by Gustav Eiffel. It became not only the most recognizable building in Paris, but also the most controversial one since the rejection of the tower during its construction was as great as its fame is huge now. French engineer Alexandre Gustave Eiffel was one of the most outstanding specialists in metal structure design of his time. During his career, he created many impressive structures, but none of them brought him such fame as the tower in Paris named after him.

The City of London Corporation, together with the Barbican, Guildhall School of Music & Drama, London Symphony Orchestra and the Museum of London, are bringing the area to life with imaginative collaborations and exciting events.

EID Architecture has been selected as one of the two finalists in an international competition for designing the 518-meters-tall tower in Fuzhou, China. Located at a prominent riverfront site in Fuzhou, Shimao North Riverfront Tower will become a dramatic centerpiece of a burgeoning new business district within the city. The design of Shimao North Riverfront Tower explores sensible approaches to supertall building today. In contrast to many form-driven towers, Shimao Fuzhou Tower aims to integrate the architectural concept with structure optimization, whilst creating an iconic and futuristic landmark with remarkable efficiency and contextual sensibility.

We do not always realize it, but the port city of Marseille is a fertile ground for exceptional architectural creations. Besides that Marseille is the largest trading port in France, the largest industrial center and the second largest city in the country, it is also a place, which age is more than 26 centuries, and where numerous monuments of the cultural, architectural and historical heritage of France are also concentrated. The abundance of architectural sights of the city is so manifold that it would take a whole week to go sightseeing at least half of them. Not only in ancient times, but over the past hundred years, the city has repeatedly inspired the greatest masters of the genre to create outstanding architectural creations.

SPARK has recently completed Arte S residential development located at Jalan Bukit Gambier near the city of George Town in Penang, Malaysia. The project comprise a pair of condominium towers containing 460 apartments. The tallest tower is 180m, the buildings together constitute the tallest “twin tower” development on the island. The client Nusmetro, a Malaysian property developer commissioned SPARK Architects to design the building and its surrounding landscape.  The towers’ flowing form was inspired by the dramatic topography of Penang Island.  The towers are located between the island’s undulating hills (Bukit Gambier) and the Penang Strait.

Today’s China is not only a country with ancient history, traditions and culture, but also one of the most flourishing states, where next to ancient palaces and temples are located impressive samples of ultra-modern architecture. Population growth has provoked not only the expansion of urban areas, but also forcing the cities growth in height. Modern projects boggle one’s imagination for their unusual expressive architecture and amaze with the scale and genius of design ideas. Chinese architects and engineers have become famous throughout the world, erecting buildings that are not only inferior to European and American counterparts, but sometimes superior to them. China’s high-rise architecture vividly demonstrate  cutting-edge technology, an impressive scale and the latest design solutions, often more remarkable than the famous skyscrapers of Dubai.
