Located on either side of the Huangpu River, these prestigious projects will transform the urban landscape of the central northern area of Shanghai.

The practice behind the recently completed Cayan Tower has just released glittering imagery for the new Mashreq Bank Headquarters, also destined for Dubai. Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) has been selected to design the 32-storey commercial headquarters for Mashreq Bank and the single rendering shows a cantilevered volume with a cluster of palm trees at the base of a gaping void.

Site excavation works are underway at the Baoneng Shenyang Global Financial Centre development in Shenyang, China, designed by global multidisciplinary firm Atkins. The development, with total investment estimated at over £1bn, consists of two towers of 565m and 328m in height, and will be the landmark of Shenyang, the largest city in northeast China. “The excavation work for the entire development site started last spring and is still ongoing,” Atkins Asia Pacific Communications Manager Christina Zhuang told WAN, adding that construction on the entire complex was due to be completed in 2018.

Aedas has won a competition to design a 155m-high office tower in Shanghai as part of a 9-block district. Three of the blocks in the district have already been scooped up by DreamWorks Animation and the occupants of the Aedas-designed blockwide tower will have view over the DreamWorks cluster.

Bates Smart has designed the first office tower in North Sydney in six years, Leighton Properties announced this week. The international developer revealed its latest scheme – 177 Pacific Highway – on 20 August and plans to occupy 76% of the tower when it completes in 2016.

At a public meeting on 20 August to discuss the future construction of Energy Tower in Midland, Texas, developer Energy Related Properties requested that the city contribute $75m to the realisation of this mammoth 56-storey tower. The project is estimated to cost $475m in total and has been designed by Edmonds International as a truly mixed-use facility with office, residential, hospitality and public amenities.
