New Heights of Nairobi

Real estate developers Jabavu Village Limited and White Lotus Projects are the names behind plans to build Nairobi’s tallest building, which will be the new home of the city’s third Hilton Hotel. The Sh11 billion (USD$109 million) dual-tower development, whose construction is set to begin in Nairobi’s Upper Hill, is scheduled to be completed by 2020.

At the end of 2016 was held awards ceremony of the world’s most renowned architecture prize for skyscrapers, the Emporis Skyscraper Award established in the year 2000. Once again the Shanghai Tower, which this year already rated by CTBUH as the Best Tall Building Worldwide, gained the lead in a race. The winners were chosen by an international panel of experts from over 300 skyscrapers of at least 100 meters height and which were completed in 2015. The 632-meter tall Shanghai Tower was chosen as the winner for several reasons, including it’s elegant spiraling cylindrical shape which was designed by Gensler Architects.

Ferminnan + Spagnoletta Architects have planned a kaleidoscopic skyscraper hotel in Berlin located between Alexanderplatz and The Hackescher, which focuses on overlapping volumes. The project’s metal patterned facades allow the building’s skin to breathe and act as a filter for incoming and outgoing light and to display its convincing volume at the same time.

Designed by ARK Reza Kabul Architects, The South Bay in Mumbai, India resembles the form of a luxurious cruise ship ready to set sail. The contemporary design of the 70 metre tall structure comes as an organic response to its surroundings. The structure features a lobby, parking, 17 residential units and a sky lounge. The roads around the structure depict the waves, with the enormous double heighted lobby forming the hull of the structure. The large double heighted archways offer a welcoming sensation.

Thailand has welcomed an interesting modern addition to their city skyline called the MahaNakhon, or the Pixel Tower. The building celebrated its official opening on August 29 with a spectacular light show in downtown Bangkok.

Architects of multi-award winning firm HOK have revealed plans to build a 234-metre-high skyscraper in east London that will segregate private and social apartments (+ slideshow). The tower has been designed by architects Larry Malcic and Christopher Colosimo.
