Recently, more and more architects suggest using the skyscrapers not quite standard way. They house in such buildings the gardens, farms for breeding animals or zoos. Our magazine has already written on one of these projects, and today we present another version of an extraordinary use of high-rise building. Haikou (“Seagate”) a city in southern China, located on the northern coast of Hainan Island, at the Nandu River mouth. Its origin relates to the period of the Tang Dynasty (618 - 907). Haikou is the largest city in Hainan, so it’s no wonder that an international competition has been declared for its Central Business District development.

Population increase, land shortage and rising land prices have made highdensity living an accepted way of life. The embracing of Corbusien city planning principles saw many a global city redefine its skyline and embrace the tall building as the panacea to high-density development in a transformation given largely to planning guidelines that were attuned to rapid economic development. Despite the typologies association with certain socio-physiological and environmental ills, the tall building nevertheless continues to be adopted as a means of achieving high densities and therefore greater economic returns in spatially compromised urban settings.

Safety in case of disaster is now an important point in purchasing homes and condominiums, but to make informed choices, the general consumer needs to have a clear understanding of the distinctions between structures that are “seismic-isolated,” “seismic-controlled,” and “earthquake-resistant”.

On the shore of Tai Lake, Chinese authorities have decided to build a multipurpose area Lanyue Bay West Convention Centre & Mixed Development, the project developed by 10 Design. The project is located in the city of Changzhou, an inland city to the North-west of Shanghai. The site is in a newly developed district adjacent to West Tai Lake, with new commercial and business districts being developed in flanking pieces of lands. The actual lot is directly beside West Tai Lake and has open panoramic views to the lake to its South, East and West.

International architecture and design practice Scott Brownrigg is submitting a Planning Application to redevelop a 28 hectares city centre site at Larnaca Port and Marina in Cyprus. The project aims to reinvigorate the ancient Byzantine city of Larnaca, transforming it into a major cruise and marine destination at the heart of the Eastern Mediterranean, with a mixed use public waterfront environment rivaling the best the world has to offer. The scheme expands the dilapidated marina to a 950 berth state-of-the-art facility and converts the existing commercial port to combine commercial, and cruise facility uses. The new cruise berths are located on an off-shore jetty; a strategy unseen outside the Caribbean.

At a time when skyscrapers rapidly gaining altitude, the CTBUH (Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat) awards the title of the best high-rise building of Europe to the 56-meter height KfW Westarkade, Frankfurt, initially seemed somewhat surprising. But in this case to the forefront came not trivial altitude parameters, and the fact that the KfW Westarkade is one of the first high-rise office buildings worldwide that can be run with less than 100 KWh per 1 sq. m of primary energy.

The vexed question of whether the world needs skyscrapers, or one can do without them, holds leading positions in the ranking of professional debate for many years.
